THE THREE LITTLE PIGS - MAKE IT MONDAY

The First and Second Little Pig wrote to some of the kids in Piako Rua.  They needed our help. The Third Little Pig wants them to move out of his house.  The kids needed to help the Pigs by building them a house that the Big Bad Wolf can not blow down.  We were HOOKed. Of course we said that we would love to help.

The first thing we needed to do was to WONDER about all the learning we would need to be able to do in order to meet the success criteria.  The Pigs need to be able to build their house from materials that they find around their brother’s house. They need to be able to build it in one hour because that is how long it take for the Big Bad Wolf to get to their house from his.

We recorded all our questions down...

We are pretty good now at figuring out what we need to find out when we go to EXPLORE

Once we had finished our WONDER sheet, we moved through to EXPLORE.  Here is where figure out all the answers to our questions. Things we learnt today were:
  • How long is an hour?
  • How tall is 20cm?
  • What materials are strong?

There were also lots of measuring, time and literacy things to do as well.

Part of learning something new, is taking the time to stop and REFLECT.  You need to check that you know everything you need to know before you move on.  In Piako Rua, we have to complete a Checkpoint with the teacher so that we can prove that we have learnt everything we need.  Mrs Ruawai was in charge of the Checkpointing today.

Once we have figured out all we need to know, we go through to the Rainbow Room to ACT.  We draw a plan of what we want to make. We list the materials we need and then we go about making it.  The whole time we need to be thinking … does this meet the success criteria? If it doesn’t we need to make changes to our design.

The final stage of the process is REFLECT.  This is done once we have completed our design.  Today we tested our houses using Mrs Lunn’s Hairdryer!  Some houses blew away! Some houses stayed put. We decided that the best houses, the ones that didn’t blow away were all heavy!

   .

We complete a REFLECT sheet.  We decide if we have met the success criteria and have a think about what we would do differently next time to improve our design.

There are some pretty CREATIVE houses that were made in Piako Rua today!
Well done kids!

CAPTAIN HOOK & TICK-TOCK THE CROCODILE

Captain Hook sent us a letter yesterday to say he needed help catching Tick-Tock the crocodile.  We had to catch him alive so that Captain Hook could punish him for eating off his arm.

During EXPLORE time we go to watch Peter Pan, complete our 'time' activities and make some fantastic bookmarks.

Then we created our crocodile traps.  They look amazing.  Most of us met the Success Criteria as we used recycled materials, our traps were sturdy and we were able to catch Tick-Tock alive.

We had a fantastic day!

TERM THREE INQUIRY - MARKET DAY

We have had a bust start to the term.  During Week One, we brainstormed a list of ALL the things we would like to do or learn about this term.  It was a pretty big list!

We looked the list and decided that we could group a few of the ideas together and hold a...
 MARKET DAY

Some of the kids remember coming to one Piako Rua held last year and everyone is very excited.

We came up with a lot of product ideas that we could sell at our Market Day

We signed up for making the one we would like to sell.

Today we conducted a survey to find out how popular our products would be.

Guess what ... SLIME was the most popular product!

Please keep watching our blog for Market Day updates!

CINDERELLA - MAKE IT MONDAY

Word must have gotten out!  We are expert problem solvers. We had ANOTHER fairytale character email us today.  Keira read the email out to the kids

Cinderella is tired of her shoes falling off and needs our help to her a pair of shoes.  Cinderella had some pretty strict success criteria that we needed to met.  We were super excited to see what we could make for Cinderella, especially when one of the criteria was that the shoes need to have another use!  What on earth could we do for that?  We WONDER!!!

We brainstormed all our ideas for what we could do!

 .

Once we had though about what we needed to find out about in EXPLORE, we went through to the other room to get started on our learning!

 .

               .

 .

Part of being a SELF MANAGER is knowing when you are ready to move onto the next stage in the Learning Process. For us, this is going to our REFLECT CHECKPOINT.  Mrs Kenyon checkpointed us to see if we were ready to move onto the ACT part of our Learning Process.

Once we passed the checkpoint we were able to move through to ACT in the Rainbow Room.

Look what we came up with!

Royce made Cinderella a hover board.  It's pretty cool!

 .
Ryla, Ava-Rose and Holly P had a great day making their shoes - lots of pink and strapy shoes today!

       .     .

Keira, Charlie and Amelia made their shoes that could also be used as handbags!  Now that is clever.

Lauren and Katie made a strap so Cinderella's shoes will stay on.

Once we had finished making our shoes we needed to REFLECT.  Did our shoes meet the Success Criteria?  Lots of them did.  We hope Cinderella likes them! .
