SPRING IN PIAKO RUA

Winter Wonderland has gone and Spring has arrived in Piako Rua.  

We have Explored the seasons and made some incredible 3D displays to show we understood what Spring is.

  

  

Then, today we did some craft activities to decorate our new Spring area.  We had baby birds in nests, lambs, flowers and lady birds.

QUILTING - Algebra Patterns

Over the last week we have looked very closely at patterns.  

We got HOOKED when we listened to Little Red Riding Hood.  Her Granny had a quilt on her bed.  The next day Mrs Ruawi came to school with her quilt and we started to look closely at the patterns (colours and shapes) on the quilt and WONDERED if we could make our own quilts with patterns on for Granny's bed.

So we started to EXPLORE lots of patterns to see what we could find out.

Mrs Ruawai bought in a quilt to have a look at how it is made

We found out that knowing your shapes is super
important when making a quilt

Max and Zachary were able repeating patterns on the whiteboard table

 

 and had a go at making our own patterns on paper.

BUT.......... just when we thought we were getting really good, we found ourselves an EXPERT.  Maryanne makes quilts!  She has made them for about 15 years for her friends and family.  She's made about 30 - 40 quilts all up.  She even has a special blade at home that she uses to cut her material.  She let us look at some of the quilts she has made.

Now that we know about patterns we thought we'd have a go at making our own class quilt.  

Mrs Kenyon and Mrs Ruawi can't sew so we're going to make ours out of paper.

'THE BIG FISH' By Pamela Allen

We had some very tired children after their big run but what a wonderful day we had.  Mrs Kenyon read us the book "The Big Fish" and then we got to create anything we wanted.  

Some of us draw pictures or coloured in, some wrote stories, and others made fishing rods.  What a great afternoon we had!

SIX MONTHS IN A LEAKY BOAT

We have been busy choreographing our dance to Six Months in a Leaky Boat for the Production.  Here is a video of us taken today - we are not quite experts at it yet but come the 3rd of July...

PAPER CHAIN CHALLENGE

Mrs Kenyon's nephew Dylan is having a birthday party and we had to make paper chains to decorate his house.  

BUT......Mrs Lunn said we would use all the coloured paper so only let us use 2 pieces. 

 

 

We had to make sure we only used 2 pieces of paper, that the chain was tidy and that it was long. 

It was tricky.  

 

Ruby, Ava T, Layla and Maddy got their chain to 2.6m long.  

Well done girls!

We hope Dylan has a wonderful party!

SCARECROW MAKING

We were lucky enough to have Keira bring her book The Scarecrow's Wedding to school for us to read.  We started reading a few more books about scarecrows and thinking about the scarecrows in our school garden. 

Mrs Kenyon and Mr Carter made the scarecrows in the school garden about 5 years ago.  

They are so old now that one of them had no head and the other had no body.

We thought about what a scarecrow needed to have.  Could we make a scarecrow?  What would we use to make it?  

  

Mr Pouniu gave us his shirt to use and Mr Carter gave us some old trousers. 

  

We stuffed their clothes with hay.

  

We had to get Rachel to help us nail the new scarecrow to his stick.  He looks great.

 

 

We also got to make our own scarecrow in class.  Most of them are on our window.  Check them out!
