INDIA VISITS PIAKO RUA

A big thank you to Rudra's mum for coming to school today and teaching us a little about India. Did you know it takes 38 hours to fly from New Zealand to India.  Rudra's grandparents come all that way to visit him twice a year.  Rudra was born in NZ but he goes back to India every second year to see his family.

Rudra and his family are Hindu.  His mum is from the state of Rajasghan.

 

We were allowed to try an Indian snack called pakoras.  It is made of onion and potato.  

Rudra's mum has about 30 different sari.  She let us try some of them on.  

 

 

 She also put a henna design on our hand.

JAPAN

We were lucky to have Kaito's mum come in today and talk to us about live in Japan.  Wow!  There are so many people living in Japan - way more than in NZ.

We saw photos of Yuziki and Kaito dressed up in traditional Japanese clothing and were allowed to try some on.  The girls looked beautiful in the kimono.  The shoes are called geta and are made from wood.

 

  

  

  

We also watched some Sumo wrestling videos.  

The heaviest sumo wrestler is 287kg that's 11.5 Kaito's or 3 Beauden Barrett's).  

 

After that we were given an origami animal and we all had our name written on the back in Japanese.  

  

  

The best part of the visit was getting to try the Japanese food.  We had okonomiyaki (savoury pancake) and sushi.

CANADA

A big thank you to Mrs McIntyre (Keira's mum) for coming and teaching us about Canada this week.  We learnt all about "Inukshuk" and made some beautiful artwork.

"A HUSKY AT THE BEACH" By Fai'ana

Once upon a time there was a husky called Snowflake.  She lived in the snow but one day a person from NZ took the husky to NZ and took her to the beach.  The husky got to hot so the husky barked at the person from NZ so he took the husky back to the snow.

"LOLLY LAND" By Ryla

Once upon a time there lived two lollies.  Once called Sprinkles the doughnut and another called Strawberry the Gummy Bear.  They went to bed and when they woke up they ended up in Cupcake Land where they met a cupcake called Raspberry.  Then they went for a little walk but they weren't looking where they were walking and fell straight into a lolly bush.  They started to tickle the bush's leaves and the lolly bush burped them out.

"FLUTTER' By Amon

At 6pm today I was with my friend Flutter.  Flutter was a swallow.  We were looking for Bling Blong, the man of the jungle but we stepped on a trap door and ended up in a even darker forest.  He heard a voice that said "Are you lost?"  "Ssssssssttttthhhhhh".  Amon was scared but Flutter was tweeting with anger.  But the myseterious voice had captured Flutter.  Just then Bling Blong kicked the mysterious voice.  Suddenly Flutter started biting the .... witch!  There was a snake slithering away and the which was never seen or heard of again.  Flutter's name was famous.

SAMOA

To continue with out study about Samoa.  Yesterday Mika's mum Bex came in with some fantastic food from Samoa.  Wow!  

First Mika told us all about how to collects coco in Samoa with his family.

  

Bex mixed it with rice and water and created a beautiful meal for us.  Some of us were not so keen on the strong taste while others went back for seconds.  Can you tell from the photos who liked it?

 

Bex had also made some Sapasui for us.  This was a real hit with most children heading back for seconds.  Lucky for us she had made lots.
