MAKE IT MONDAY - RUBBISH ROBOT CHALLENGE

The kids at Riverdale have been littering in the playground quite a bit lately.
We decided something HAS to be done!

Keira and Holly H came up with the Rubbish Robot Challenge.
They presented us with the challenge today...

The girls showed us a video about all the plastic and styrofoam that ends up in the oceans.

We WONDERED what we could do to help with the rubbish around the school.  We spent some time with our group brainstorming all our ideas on what we needed to know to make our robot and to met the success criteria.

Next we went through to EXPLORE.  This is were we find out all the answers to our questions.  The teachers had also set up the Bee-Bots for us to practise our coding.

In EXPLORE, we watched videos on Ocean Pollution.

After we EXPLORED and had gathered all the information we needed, we went to meet Mrs Kenyon at the REFLECT Checkpoint.  We had to prove that we are ready to move into the ACT phase.

Now here comes the messy part... ACT!  We love this bit!  It's time to make our robots.  First we make a plan and list all the materials that we will need and then we set to work.

Here are a few of our finished Rubbish Robots...

In the afternoon we assess our Rubbish Robots against the success criteria.  Our teachers are so impressed with how honest we are when we are assessing our robots.

What a fabulous job they did.

MILKSHAKE FRIDAY

We had so many kids away in Week Two that lots of our friends missed out on making milkshakes.  Mrs Lunn took them this Friday instead so that they didn't miss out...

Looks like they enjoyed themselves!

MEASURING FUN

Today some of us watched a video story of Cosmo the Boat Cat...

Mrs Lunn issued us with a challenge.  On Thursday we are going to make a boat to sail in the school pool.  But first we need to find out all about weight  so that we can make our boats.

We used a stretchy machine to measure how
heavy things are
We measured the capacity of different obects
to see how much things hold
We made our very own weighing machines
 to weigh things in

We watched this funny song about weight too...

You can help us at home by getting us to help you cook tea or bake.  We would love to use the scales at home.  You might like to ask us about which objects are heavier or lighter than others.

Vocabulary we are beginning to use:

  • weight
  • weigh
  • lighter
  • heavier
  • balance
  • scales

COOKING OPT-IN: SMOOTHIE MAKING

On Friday some of us got to make smoothies.

Judging by the messy faces, they tasted pretty good!

RUSSIAN FUDGE

Look what the kids made on Friday!
They had to be soooo careful because the bowl got very hot in the microwave!

The fudge was DELICIOUS

FRIDAY FUN DAY

On Friday we do art and baking.  We don't do Reading or Maths.
I love Fridays!
By Charlie

Today Mrs Lunn made smoothies with some of our kids.  We had to bring some fruit to school to use as our ingredients.  The kids in this group were all really kind and they decided to share their fruit.  First they had to cut the fruit up into smaller pieces.  They had to be very careful with the knife!

Jacob noticed the capacity measurements on the side...

The kids each had a turn at making their smoothie...

Samantha and Ruby were very excited to make their smoothies...

How did they taste? You might ask.
DELICIOUS!!!
