THE THREE LITTLE PIGS - MAKE IT MONDAY

The First and Second Little Pig wrote to some of the kids in Piako Rua.  They needed our help. The Third Little Pig wants them to move out of his house.  The kids needed to help the Pigs by building them a house that the Big Bad Wolf can not blow down.  We were HOOKed. Of course we said that we would love to help.

The first thing we needed to do was to WONDER about all the learning we would need to be able to do in order to meet the success criteria.  The Pigs need to be able to build their house from materials that they find around their brother’s house. They need to be able to build it in one hour because that is how long it take for the Big Bad Wolf to get to their house from his.

We recorded all our questions down...

We are pretty good now at figuring out what we need to find out when we go to EXPLORE

Once we had finished our WONDER sheet, we moved through to EXPLORE.  Here is where figure out all the answers to our questions. Things we learnt today were:
  • How long is an hour?
  • How tall is 20cm?
  • What materials are strong?

There were also lots of measuring, time and literacy things to do as well.

Part of learning something new, is taking the time to stop and REFLECT.  You need to check that you know everything you need to know before you move on.  In Piako Rua, we have to complete a Checkpoint with the teacher so that we can prove that we have learnt everything we need.  Mrs Ruawai was in charge of the Checkpointing today.

Once we have figured out all we need to know, we go through to the Rainbow Room to ACT.  We draw a plan of what we want to make. We list the materials we need and then we go about making it.  The whole time we need to be thinking … does this meet the success criteria? If it doesn’t we need to make changes to our design.

The final stage of the process is REFLECT.  This is done once we have completed our design.  Today we tested our houses using Mrs Lunn’s Hairdryer!  Some houses blew away! Some houses stayed put. We decided that the best houses, the ones that didn’t blow away were all heavy!

We complete a REFLECT sheet.  We decide if we have met the success criteria and have a think about what we would do differently next time to improve our design.

There are some pretty CREATIVE houses that were made in Piako Rua today!
Well done kids!
