Welcome to Term Four

Kia ora whanau

With the end of the holidays in sight, I thought I would sent a quick email so you know what we will be getting up to this term.

We will be continuing with Make it Monday Challenges. We would really appreciate you sending along your boxes, tubes, containers and other bits and pieces on Mondays, so that the children can re use them.

We have Athletics Sports Day at Massey on the 21st of November. We will be training at school each day, so we would really appreciate you sending your child in suitable footwear for running.

In Maths for the first few weeks, we will be learning about Time and Temperature. You might like to watch the weather on TV with your child as this is a great way to help them learn about temperature. After that, we will me moving on to learn about Money.

We look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Warmest wishes
Jo Lunn

FRACTIONS FRACTIONS

Today the Orange and Yellow Maths groups have been learning about Fractions.

The other day we cut different shapes in half but today we learnt to find the fraction of a set.  We used counters.

Did you know that the top number of a fraction tells you how many you have and the bottom number tells you how many there are altogether.

This song explains it well...

Look what these clever kids can do!
They can find fractions of a set!

Ways to help at home:

You can talk to us about fractions - ask us if we'd like HALF and apple, or maybe just a QUARTER of an apple.

When we set the table ask us how many spoons there are out of how many utensils there are altogether.

Try and use fractions as part of our everyday language.  Telling the time is great - It's QUARTER past etc

GENIUS HOUR - EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATOR

Today for Genius Hour, we focused on the Nga Matapono belief of being an Effective Communicator.

We could do or make ANYTHING we liked so long as we were being...
 EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATORS.

Conrad and Amon made this microphone to help people speak loud and clear at our Piako Rua assemblies.  Have a look at Amon explaining how it works.  It's pretty cute!

"We are Effective Communicators when we take turns to talk" Brooke

"We are Effective Communicators when we use gestures" Amon

"We are Effective Communicators when we use kind words" Keira

"We are Effective Communicators when we write neatly so people can read it" Max

"We are Effective Communicators when we look at the person who is speaking" Maddy

"We are Effective Communicators when we wait our turn to talk" Ryla

  _____________

You can help us at home, by talking about what we did today and what we think makes us an Effective Communicator, and reminding us to do some of the things on our chart above.

PLACE VALUE

In Maths for the next few weeks, we are learning about place value.  We need to know what numbers add up to 5, what numbers at up to 10, our doubles, and then how many groups of ten are in a double digit number ie: 4 tens in 40.

As you can see we have a LOT to learn.  You can help us at home by talking with us about what we are doing in Maths and maybe even playing some of the place value games on the Blog.  Playing games like Snakes and Ladders, with two dice, is a great way for us to practise counting fast and it's fun for me and you to hang out together too!

Here are some songs we can sing at home that help too...

Finn did a great job of making the place value ice cream game Mrs Lunn made

Brooke and our new friend Skylah, were busy playing Whack It Place Value

As you may have heard, we are busy preparing for our Production.

Today a note was sent home with the children stating what they need to bring to wear for the Production.  If you have any hassles sourcing what is required, please let us know.

If you know that your child is not available for the evening of the 3rd of July, please let us know so we can plan accordingly.

Thank you so much for your on-going support.

Regards

MEASURING FUN

Today some of us watched a video story of Cosmo the Boat Cat...

Mrs Lunn issued us with a challenge.  On Thursday we are going to make a boat to sail in the school pool.  But first we need to find out all about weight  so that we can make our boats.

We used a stretchy machine to measure how
heavy things are
We measured the capacity of different obects
to see how much things hold
We made our very own weighing machines
 to weigh things in

We watched this funny song about weight too...

You can help us at home by getting us to help you cook tea or bake.  We would love to use the scales at home.  You might like to ask us about which objects are heavier or lighter than others.

Vocabulary we are beginning to use:

  • weight
  • weigh
  • lighter
  • heavier
  • balance
  • scales
