TIE DYED MILK - SCIENCE

We had a blast at our Science opt in workshop today. 

Adding food colouring to milk looks great.  

But look at what happens when Shyloh adds dish liquid to the milk. 
The colours all move around and create some amazing patterns.

STATIC ELECTRICITY - SCIENCE

Our static electricity Science opt-in created a lot of interest and fun today.  Check it out!

We borrowed LC 14's Plasma Ball.  We thought it was fascinating when we touched the ball.  The lights went towards our hands!  It was pretty cool!

  

 

This is how it works...

DINOSAURS!

Quinn G, Zachary and Oliver W presented their Dinosaur challenge to us.  We had to make or do something based on dinosaurs.  They came up with the Success Criteria for us and told us how we will know if we are successful.

First we WONDERed what we could do or make about Dinosaurs and then we went into the EXPLORE phase of Te Ako Ritenga.

We had to attend the Checkpoint REFLECT station so that we could prove that we were ready to move to ACT

Then we planned what we were going to make in the ACT part of our challenge.

                                       


 The final stage of our Inquiry process, is REFLECT.  This is were we stop and check if we have met all the success criteria.  We had a big sharing session in the afternoon and everyone got to show off their fabulous creations.

SCIENCE SHARING SESSION

We had our sharing session for our Opt-In workshops.  This was a great way to finish up this term's Science learning.  We have discovered that we are now thinking like Scientists.

We took the opportunity to share with our friends all our learning.

EXPLORING SHADOWS

We took time to EXPLORE shadows today in the Light and Colour Opt-in... here is what we found out:

Light passes through holes in things so the holes do not not make a shadow - Xavier

If the sun was shining onto you, you'd have a black light shadow because you are blocking the sunlight - Zac

When your fingers are spread out you can see the shadow when you hold a torch to it but you can also see a dim shadow around the main show - Keira

If you put the torch closer to the object, the shadow will be smaller and it you pull the torch further away from the object, the shadow will be bigger - Oliver H and Christopher

If you put something close to the light the shadow will be bigger - Zac

Light does not shine through solid things - Keira

Light shines through transparent things - Jacob N

MIXING COLOURS

Today in Mrs Lunn's Colours and Light Opt-in Workshop, we explored mixing colours.  We used paddles of plastic in different colours and a torch to have a go at trying to make new colours.

Here is what we discovered...

• We found out that when we put two paddles together, and shine the torch through, it makes a different colour
• We found out that blue and yellow made green 
• We found out that red and yellow make orange
• We found out that blue and red make purple

BALLOON BOAT MAKING CHALLENGE

Wow!  What a day we've had.  A huge thank you to Zac, Oliver and Lloyd for creating our Make It Monday challenge.

The boys HOOKed us in with the The Gingerbread Man story and left us with the challenge of creating a balloon powered boat to get the Gingerbread Man safely across the water.

There was a lot of WONDERing going on in Piako Rua today.

We EXPLOREd in Wonderland... we needed to find answers to all our questions.  We are still learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

Soon it was time to ACT...

  

 

Our REFLECTion today included some interesting discussion about why cardboard boxes wouldn't float and why Mrs Kenyon couldn't use the hot glue gun to glue balloons onto boxes.
