ROYCE'S READING

Royce had a brilliant day at school today.  He was a whiz at Kelly's Sports and he learnt to play a new Maths game.

Here he is engrossed in reading a new picture book.  We might have to read that one to the class tomorrow... it looks like Royce really enjoys it!

OUR FIRST CANDYLANDER

Congratulations Ryla!

You are Piako Rua's first Candylander for the year.

You meet all the criteria and are super responsible.

We think they'll be a few friends joining you in Candyland soon!

PRODUCTION INQUIRY

Today we explored the different costume and prop options for our Production item.  We worked in small groups to evaluate each of the options.  We needed to figure out if the option met the criteria we set.

We had to reflect on the strengths and weakness of the option and come up with a 'So what?'

The teachers were blown away with how seriously we took our task and how critically we were able to reflect on each option.

KELLY SPORTS

We were very fortunate to have 3 Kelly Sports coaches visit Riverdale School today.  The children got to try all sorts of activities - rugby, athletics, catching fish, and soccer kicks.  They thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Yesterday we went Kelly's Sports and we did the relay and the hurdles and we did fishing and we did soccer and we did rugby.  It was fun.

We had a blast on the last day of school for Term 1.

We went to a Magic Show featuring...

 THE AMAZING MR PIKE!

He is a fabulous magician!  Even the teachers couldn't figure out how he did his tricks!

Mr Pike, we appreciate you sharing your talent with us.

GECKO SKIN

When Katie and Zena were at their Grandad's house in Pukerua Bay near Wellington, they found a gecko and near that gecko they found its old skin!  How about that!

Here is a photo of Katie sharing the gecko skin with the class, and a close up of the skin.
Jack said it looks like a ghost gecko! We agree!  Thanks for bringing it along to show the kids Katie

MAKING BOATS

We had a blast at school today.

Not only did Belinda bring her fire truck to school, but we made our boats!  Mrs Lunn showed us some photos of the boats the Maori people used to come from Hawaiki to New Zealand many, many years ago.  We had a close look at these ocean going waka and Mrs Lunn challenged us to include on feature of a waka on OUR boat.

The teachers were very impressed with what we came up with.  Many of our groups made a boat with two hulls to make them more stable.  Lots of us put sails on our boats and a few groups put a paddle to help the teddies steer their ship.  We were very good at modifying our designs to incorporate the newest Success Criteria

Then the teachers set up a testing station for us to test our boats.  They were very impressed with how well our boats meet the Success Criteria.

Here are a few photos of us in action...

We had a wonderful time building our boats.  This activity provided us with an opportunity to practise our problem solving strategies, our negotiating skills and our ability to cooperate.  The teachers were very proud of us AND our boats.

FIRE SAFETY

To celebrate the end of Fire Safety this term Piako Tahi and Rua were treated to a visit by Belinda and her fire engine.  Everyone who wanted to got to hold the fire hose.  It was hard work.
