We set up a Pop-Up shop on Thursday morning to sell a few more of our crafts for the SPCA. At the Market day we raised $311. We thought we'd try and get a few extra coins for such a great cause.
It was also a great way for us to practice our money skills!
Today we got a letter from the Mouse in the nursery rhyme, Hickory Dickory Dock. He needs our help!
Every time the mouse runs up the clock, the clock chimes and gives him a fright. The mouse wants us to make him a clock so he can practise telling the time. Then he will know when to avoid running up the clock!

The first thing we do when given a problem to solve, is WONDER. We got into small groups and brainstormed all our ideas. We had to think about how we were going to make the hands move, and how to make our clock creative.When we THINK we are ready to move to ACT, we first need to check that we have learnt all the things that we need in order to make a clock that meets the success criteria.
In the EXPLORE phase, we learnt all about how to tell the time so that we could teach the Mouse. We practised reading and writing times and we also had lots of activities all based on the nursery rhyme Hickory Dickory Dock. We looked at different types of clocks to get some ideas.

We get CHECKPOINTED to show the teachers that we are ready to move into the next phase of Te Ako Ritenga, our Learning Process.
ACT, this is where we bring together all our learning from EXPLORE. We draw a plan of the clock we want to make. We list all the materials we need to make it.
Then we gather all the bits and pieces we need and we begin making our clocks. We have to negotiate with our friends as to who is making what part of the clock. We are constantly reflecting on our clock and thinking about what we could do to make it better.
Once our clocks are all finished we have a sharing time. We explain our clocks to the rest of the class and together we decide if we have met the success criteria. Sometimes we only meet some of the criteria. When that happens, we think of ways to improve our clock so that all the Success Criteria are met.

Kia ora whanau With the end of the holidays in sight, I thought I would sent a quick email so you know what we will be getting up to this term.
We will be continuing with Make it Monday Challenges. We would really appreciate you sending along your boxes, tubes, containers and other bits and pieces on Mondays, so that the children can re use them.
We have Athletics Sports Day at Massey on the 21st of November. We will be training at school each day, so we would really appreciate you sending your child in suitable footwear for running.
In Maths for the first few weeks, we will be learning about Time and Temperature. You might like to watch the weather on TV with your child as this is a great way to help them learn about temperature. After that, we will me moving on to learn about Money.

The HOOK for today's Make it Monday was singing the Baby Shark Song - (It is one of our favourites but be warned... it gets stuck in your head!)
We were challenged to make a something so that scientists could see the sharks in their natural habitat.
We were given success criteria, that we needed to meet. Then it was time to WONDER...
We brainstormed all our ideas and thought about the things that we needed to learn in order to meet the challenge.
Then it was time to EXPLORE. We went in to Wonderland and learnt all about 2d and 3d shapes.
After we had found out some new information, we went to the CHECKPOINT STATION. This is where we stop and REFLECT on what we have learnt so far. The teacher listened to us explain all our learning. Afterwards, we could go to ACT next door in the Rainbow Room.
After we made our inventions, we REFLECTED. Did we meet the success criteria?
The we had to be EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATORS and explain our invention to the rest of the class.
"Can you make something that you would find in space?"
That was the challenge that the Koalas reading group set the rest of the class today.

Space?! We were HOOKed. But we had a couple of questions about the Success Criteria.
We WONDERed what a 2D shape and 3D shape was?
Then we had to EXPLORE.
Then it was time to ACT. We made spaceships, aliens, rockets and planets.
When we did our REFLECT we had a lot to say...
Lloyd & Zac W - Made a rocket. Next time they'd make a parachute to slow the rocket down when it reaches space.
Oliver & Quinn - Made a rocket with seat belts.
Harlem - Made all 7 planets, but next time he'll make an astronaut to visit the planets.
Layla, Nina & Lauren - Made a galaxy BUT next time "We'd take the flag off".
Amelia, Fai'ana & Charlie - "Made aliens and a big rocket. Amelia says "Some things didn't work out for us. We made different stuff so it looked creative".
Connor & Dominic - "It has boosters and it can drive". They used tinfoil in case the rocket crashed in the water so it was waterproof.
