TE WHIRINGWHA

Today was a pretty special day in Piako Rua.  The teachers and Pa Jack talked to us about Te Whiringawha.  On a Marae, there are four different roles that people play.  They are:

Ariki

  • Leader

Tohunga
  • Expert
  • Treasure
Mangotoa
  • Defender
  • Protector
and finally...
Aronui
  • Adminiatrator
  • Carer
The teachers explained that we are made of parts of each of these.  Some of us have more Aronui for example, than others.  When we grow, we might change but in the meantime we had to have a think about what colours we thought we are now.

We each were given a stylised picture of a person that we had to colour in.  We needed to think about how much of each colour we think we are.  The teachers were amazed with how well we knew ourselves.

You might like to talk to us about this at home.  You will be pleasantly surprised with how well we can articulate what we talked about today.

ACHIEVING TAU

Pa Jack came to talk to us today about how we can create tau (balance) in our lives. We learnt about 3 different things.

Toiora - This is when you are the best at something or you won something.  You are soooo happy and
have lots of energy.

Tau - When you are chilled out, relaxed, and everything is cool.  You feel balanced. The teachers never get tired of people being tau, we want you to be tau. This will help you to make friends. It is when you know the rules and know how to stay out of trouble.

Kahupo - This is when you are sad, unhappy, lost or worried. Maybe you don't know what is going to happen and you have butterflies in your tummy. This might happen when someone is mean or nasty to you.
Kia tau, i nga wa katoa - In all things, seek balance

Everyone will find tau in a different place. Take a look at how some of the children find tau.

Braxton likes to play                                                   Charlie likes to lie in her bed.
Rippa with his dad

  Jacob likes to play soccer.
William likes to play with
his superheroes.

TE REO MAORI - COMMANDS

Pa Jack came to visit us yesterday.  We are working on learning some new commands.  They started pretty easy but got a LOT harder!

You can help us practise them at home.

HOMAI TE ĀHUA - PASS ME THE SHAPE

Today when Pa Jack came, Mrs Lunn taught us a new sentence structure - Homai te ...  This means pass the ...

We applied our knowledge of names of shapes in Maori to this sentence structure.

Then we completed an activity with our hoa (friend).  We had to ask them to pass the shape we needed to make our pikitia (picture).

Look how clever we are!
We are definitely becoming EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATORS in Te Reo Maori!

PA JACK VISIT

Today Pa Jack came to tell us the story behind the new tukutuku patterns outside our class.

He told us the story about the patiki (flounder) which creates the diamond pattern.
If you catch the patiki you are smart and people will respect you.

The children had a go at using the diamond pattern and other patiki patterns to create their own tukutuku patterns.
