SNOW AND ICE INQUIRY DAY

On Monday we started the day getting into groups that we would be working in for the day. We all got our own picture of a movie character. When we had found a group of our friends who all had a different character, we looked closely at (observed) the pictures to decide where they all would be found and what would be seen in that environment.

Mrs Kenyon collected our ideas.
It was SNOW and ICE
Mrs Ruawai went skiing in the holidays and other kids went to the snow but we couldn't bring any snowflakes home
We watched a clip about a man who actually photographed. His name was Snowflake Bentley.

The challenge was to make a snowflake that was at least 20 cm and had symmetry.

We wondered what symmetry was...

and spent time exploring this...

Then it was time to use all that new knowledge to make the snowflakes. Zachary and Max drew them on the cushions

Others used paper and cut them

 .

This group put theirs together as one snowflake...
 Oliver was fascinated watching the
snowflake tutorial on YouTube

And then added hooks for hanging them...

Next it was time to get some dinosaurs out of a block of ice... using only cold water, or warm water or salt...

We found out salt helps ice melt quite well!!!!

Jacob's group melted their ice first.  Here they are telling the rest of the class how they did it.
