MAKE IT MONDAY - PENGUIN CHALLENGE

Make it Monday - By Zachary

Yesterday we had to make a penguin habitat.  Mine was creative.  My penguin habitat had an icy pool and the habitat had a door that opened and closed.  Next I thought about putting on a chimney.  Then I remembered to make a penguin so I made a penguin.

HOMAI TE ĀHUA - PASS ME THE SHAPE

Today when Pa Jack came, Mrs Lunn taught us a new sentence structure - Homai te ...  This means pass the ...

We applied our knowledge of names of shapes in Maori to this sentence structure.

Then we completed an activity with our hoa (friend).  We had to ask them to pass the shape we needed to make our pikitia (picture).

Look how clever we are!
We are definitely becoming EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATORS in Te Reo Maori!

SCIENCE OPT-IN - COLOUR AND LIGHT

Today Mrs Lunn challenged us to make a rainbow using some different objects.  She gave us a mirror, a prism, a piece of white paper and a torch.  She said we might not need to use all the things she gave us... but it was up to us to see what combinations worked.  We WONDERED how we were going to do it!

There was HUGE excitement in Wonderland as we EXPLORED how to make rainbows.

Here's what we found out:

Mason - When Elliot was holding the prism, we aimed the flashlight at it and it made a really big rainbow

Parker - When we held the prism up to our eyes and tilted it we saw a gigantic rainbow and everyone we looked at looked like a rainbow

Keira - I thought it was quite cool, just like Parker said, when you had it on your eye that when I looked at our rainbow flags, the colours changed

Finn - Me and Quinn B put the prism on the edge and then shone the torch and it made a big rainbow

Jacob S - We put a mirror on the bottom and one on the top with prism on the bottom mirror and we put the torch at the prism and we could see a rainbow

Connor - I found out that me and Cruz could make a rainbow by putting a mirror on the bottom and putting the prism upside down.  We flashed the light and it made a rainbow.

SO WHAT...

Finn - You can make rainbows out of light

Keira - The light is made up of different colours

Here is a video of Keira explaining what she knows about rainbows...

Science - By Quinn B
In Science we were working with Mrs Lunn.  We were trying to make.  They were pretty hard and we used a torch ad a triangular prism and a mirror.

WHITE CHOCOLATE GOES TO CONNOR'S HOUSE

White Chocolate went to Connor's house for the weekend.  He needed to have surgery on his neck.  Luckily Connor's Aunty Maryanne (you will recognise her from working at school) is a great sewer and fixed him right up!

Connor made White Chocolate an oxygen mask so that he could breathe during surgery.

After White Chocolate was all patched up, he felt great so he went outside to play.
Unfortunately White Chocolate decided to make a bad choice!  He climbed up the pool fence!
"Watch out White Chocolate!  You'll fall in!!!"

Oh no!
Look out!  You'll fall in!

We told you to get down White Chocolate!  Naughty Bear!

But because he was soooo cold in the pool, he had to have a bath to warm up.  We hope you learnt your lesson White Chocolate!

BEYBLADE CHALLENGE

Today Connor and Dominic challenged the children to make a Beyblade.  They came up with the success criteria all by themselves.  We were very impressed with how confidently Dominic explained to the children what they needed to do.

WATTIES CAN COLLECTION FOR FOODBANK

A big thanks to our Student Council members Fai'ana and Miharo for helping to organise this event.

Riverdale collected over 250 cans for the Salvation Army Foodbank.

LIGHTNING STRIKE

Today Mrs Lunn took the 'Lightning Strike' workshop today.

Look what we made...

HE AHA TE ĀHUA? WHAT IS THIS SHAPE

Today we learnt the name of shapes in Maori.  Mrs Ruawai helped us by showing us a slideshow with all the shapes on it.

Pa Jack came and helped us learn the Maori words.  We needed to check we were saying them right.

We practised saying the names of the shapes and we had a worksheet to do.  Some of us made puzzles with Maori designs on them,  We played a matching game too.

LIVING WORLD - PENGUINS

Our animal learning and report writing is progressing well.

Penguins.
Penguins are birds.  Penguins can't fly.  Penguins have a white body.  Their back is black.  Penguins don't have wings they have flippers.  They have flippers with solid bones.
The mum goes off and gets food for the baby.  The dad stays and looks after the egg.  About 2 months later the mum comes back.
Penguins eat krill, squid and fish.  The mum puts the food in her mouth and puts it in the babies mouth.
Penguins live in Antarctica and South America.  They also live in Australia and New Zealand.  They go in the water to keep cool.  They are good swimmers.
Once I saw a penguin.

The mummy lays the egg and dad looks after it.  The mum goes off to get food for the baby.  When the mum comes back she has food in her mouth.  She regurgitates it.
They give the baby krill, squid and fish to eat.  When she regurgitates it it goes into the babies mouth.
Penguins live in the icy Antarctica and it is very cold at Antarctica.
I want to see a penguin so badly.  I wish I had one as a pet but I would have trouble keeping it cold.

I have never seen a penguin and they are cute and interesting.

We made some pretty fantastic looking penguins of our own.  They are going to live in our Winter Wonderland area.
