SCIENCE - LIVING WORLD - ANIMALS

We were lucky to have two experts from Massey University visit us today to teach us about animals.

Dr Penny Back knows so much about cows she visits countries like Indonesia and Myanmar to help teach them.

Dr Kate Griffiths talked to us about Deer.  We had a lot of questions for her.

It was lucky that we have being learning about mammals so we had lots of sensible questions to ask them.

Thanks for coming Penny and Kate!

100 DAYS OF SCHOOL!

Yay!  We are 100 days smarter!  We have spent the past 100 days learning lots of new things, trying out new challenges, and celebrating our success.
Today we celebrated with a day filled with activities all based on the number 100! Kids were asked to bring 100 things to school.     Kosmo made a huge collection of leaves.  Very creative Kosmo!  The teachers set out HEAPS of activites for us to chose from.  We had a little checklist so we could keep track of which activity stations we had completed.  We even got to make our own snack - fairy bread with 100s and 1000s!

There was a scavenger hunt.  We had to find love hearts with numbers from 1 to 100 inside them and put them on the wall in the hallway, in the correct order.  We still can't find number 16 - let us know if you see it please!

The boys worked so well together to get the numbers in the right order... it was a real team effort!

At another station we got to make 100 glasses and 100 days smarter hats.  These kids had a great time chatting and making their glasses and hats together.

One of the most popular stations, was the SNACK station!  We were able to make our own fairy bread with 100s and 1000s!  It was delicious.

We made portraits of what we might look like when we are 100 years old!

Our Parents were invited.  Here is a photo of Kosmo's mum working with some of the kids.

There were so many activities to choose from!  We skip counted to 100 in 2s, 5s and 10s.  We built things with 100 pieces of Lego and we stamped 100 fingerprints!

We completed number puzzles based on using the 100s board.
Some of us made a cup tower with 100 cups!

The girls were busy making a paper chain.  It needed to have 100 links in it.  The girl were practising their maths by working out how many more they needed to add to get to 100.
Such clever cookies they are!

The boys had a turn at making a paper chain too.  They made ten groups of ten strips of paper so that they would know they have the right amount of links in their chain.
How's that for clever thinking!

Our 100 day celebration was fabulous!  We had a blast!

ART - KITE FLYING

Today some of us got to use symmetry in our art.  We had to cut out kites, draw the two lines of symmetry on them and make very cool tails with bows.

The hardest part was the cutting out.

Take a look at some of the final results.

SCIENCE - OUR WONDERINGS

After our first week learning about animals we are left with a few Wonderings.

These are some of them:

  • Why are some rabbits fluffy and some aren't?
  • Do kangaroos live in the desert?
  • Do seals have skin or fur?
  • Are humans animals?
  • What do giraffes eat?
  • How do rabbits hop?
  • Do sharks have scales?
  • What is the biggest animal on the planet?
  • Where does a conquer bear live?
  • Why are hedgehogs spikey?
  • Why are some eggs called larvae?
Let's hope we can answer some of our Wonderings next week.

ELLIOT'S POTION

Elliot has been so enthusiastic about Science that he even tried making a potion at home!  His Dad sent in this video of an experiment that they did last night...

You might like to try it at home! Click on the link to see it...

REPORT WRITING

Today the Penguins, Giraffes and Seals started learning about Report Writing.  We read lots of reports about different animals, the cheetah report was our favourite.  We didn't know that lots of cheetah cubs die before they become adults.
This is what we knew today about reports.  I bet we know more in a couple of weeks.

We decided we'd write our first report about dogs because we knew so much about them.
Take a look at our first try.

Some dogs are so cute.  Some are so smart if they get trained so well.  Some dogs like grey hounds are very fast because they do races.  Dogs have different sized tails.  Dogs smell so well like Police dogs and Police dogs are working at the airports to sniff if some people bring in lollies.  By Kaito

Dogs run fast and they have four legs.  They have long tails and dogs have two eyes and wet noses and dogs are nice.  They jump and they like their tummies rubbed and they live in kennels. By Skylah

Dogs have four legs and they like to run outside.  They eat dog food and they have two eyes.  Some dogs are small and big and some live in a kennel.  Some are so funny because they try to eat bees.  Some hide in the garden.  By Ava Rose

Dogs have four legs and like to run fast.  Dogs have two eyes.  Some dogs are pretty and live in kennels.  Dogs like to eat dog bones and are animals.  Dogs are different colours.  By Ryla

A dog is an animals.  They love to run around.  Dog's have four legs.  They have two eyes and wet noses and senses.  They are very intelligent and smart.  Some have fancy accessories.  Some dogs can do tricks.  Dogs can be furry.  By Keira

SCIENCE - PHYSICAL WORLD - MAGNETS

Today those of us that opted into 'Magnets' for Science had our first session with Mrs Lunn.  Our first activity was to sort a collection of objects that Mrs Lunn had collected, and sort them into groups.

Scientists are good at classifying things.
We took turns at picking an object and deciding which hoop it should go into.  As scientists, we asked ourselves if it was the same as anything else, or was it different.  We ended up classifying the objects by what things were made of...

Hmm... Kazma is WONDERing what this object is made of.  It felt like plastic on the sides but when he flipped it over he could see it was made of cardboard.

 .

When we were classifying all the objects, we realised that some objects could actually be put in more than one hoop.  We decided that if we overlapped the hoops, we could put the object in the middle of where the two hoops overlapped.  We found a lot of our objects that we both METAL and PLASTIC like the scissors and some clothes pegs.

We came up with label names for each set:  Wood, Plastic, Metal, Wax, Fabric and Cardboard.

Next Mrs Lunn showed us the magnets.  Our challenge was to EXPLORE all the different objects and see what happens when we put the magnets next to them...

We soon found out that not all objects stick to the magnets.  We wondered what objects that stuck to the magnets had in common.  We noticed that the magnets stuck to metals.

We decided to test our theory - Magnets stick to metals.

Weird... we OBSERVED (that's a scientist's word for looked) that NOT all metals stuck to the magnet.  So we came up with a new theory... SOME metals stick to magnets but not all.

We reflected on what we found out today:
  • Some objects can be classified into more than one group
  • Plastic is not magnetic
  • Wood, Cardboard and Wax are not magnetic
  • Fabric is not magnetic
  • SOME metals are magnetic
We thought and acted like Scientists today.  We observed, we made connections, we came up with theories and EXPLORED them then we evaluated them.  Pretty flash stuff!

Magnets - By Tyler
When me and Jack were doing Magnets, we got the big magnet.  We had a lot of fun.  We found out that some metals do not stick to magnets.

When me and Tyler were doing Magnets, we got the big magnet and we had fun with the magnets.  Max was with us as well.  I found out that we could classify objects into wood, metal, plastic and rubber.

Magnets - By Kade
Yesterday the teacher put my magnet up on the roof.  It stuck to a metal thing hanging down.  I found out that some metals are magnetic and some metals are not.

SCIENCE: LIVING WORLD - ANIMALS

Today we had our first Science session with Mrs Kenyon.
We are going to learn about the Animal Kingdom.

It was kinda tricky because we didn't even know the name of some of the animals she had for us.
Some of us had never seen a bison or an antelope before, and do you do know the names of all the birds?  It's not easy.

But, we kept at it.  We checked out the animals, had a play and then 'tried' to put them into groups.  BUT.....there were lots of ways to group them.
For example; green animals, animals that like water and animals that live on a farm.

Jacob N taught us a new word called reptile which is the group that our snakes can go into.

We're going to try this activity again next week.
