FIREWISE WRITING

"So I think I would be a good firefighter because I am confident and I am kind and I like helping people and I also like the big red firetruck and I like red and yellow.".
By Izzy

"Belinda works at the fire station.  I reckon Belinda has a cool fire truck.  The sire goes 'WEEE-OOO' so people know the fire truck is coming".
By Ethan

"Today there was a firefighter at Piako Tahi.  They told us to do the right thing when there's a fire.  I think it would be fun to be a firefighter and I would love too".
By Ava T

"Today in the morning we went to Piako Tahi to see firefighters.  The first thing I saw was photos about what they do like fires, saving animals, and earthquakes.  SO if there is a fire we go to the mailbox and if we find a match or a lighter we give it to our teacher or mum and dad".

OUR SPECIAL VISITORS

Today Belinda and her crew came to see us at Riverdale School.  They are firefighters and they talked to us about being FIREWISE!

This is Belinda.  She is a firefighter

Mr Pike made a fantastic looking firefighter

Over the next few weeks we will be learning how to be Firewise.  Belinda said they will come back in a few weeks and will bring the fire truck with them.  She said we'll be able to squirt the hose!

NEW TOYS

The teachers went shopping in the weekend and got us some new toys for our classroom.
There we so many new toys to choose from that it was like Christmas in Piako Rua on Monday morning when we helped the teachers unwrap all the toys!

Liam played happily with the new cash register

Oliver H, Alec and Layla B practised their fine motor skills by threading laces around some woodland creatures

Here is Holly introducing our new dinosaur the Stegosaurus to T-Rex in Whisper Island

Neaveh, Brooke, Isabel, Ruby and Ava T were thrilled with the new furniture and dolls for the dolls house

Keira and Miharo were developing their fine motor skills pegging the washing on our new airer

TEAMWORK AT READING TIME

Mrs Lunn took photos of these lovely happy kids working together in reading time.

PATCH THE PIRATE WRITING

"If I got Patch to take home he would go and make a hot chocolate.  Oh I know what your thinking.  How would he make one?  We have a hot chocolate machine.  He would also put chocolate sprinkles on top.  Oh and he would probably ride my cat like a horse and he would play on my iPad".
By Izzy

"Naughty Patch swinging on the light.  Patch also climbed in to the fridge and stole yoghurt".
By Brooke

"I shouted because I got Patch but when I was asleep he jumped on the light ad broke it.  I woke up then and I saw him and had to chase him all around Palmerston North.  5 hours later I finally caught him.  Then i took hi home ad said "Naughty Patch" and they lived happily ever after".

"Patch was climbing up the freezer.  He is trying to get the Yoghurts!"

PATCH THE PIRATE

This is Patch the Pirate.  He was given to Piako Rua last year, by Mr Pouniu's second cousin, who is a pirate.

The teachers have never let Patch go home with the children.  Since he is a pirate, they don't know what he would get up too staying overnight at our houses.

Amon came up with a great idea.
He asked if Patch could go home with the teachers so that we could see if he behaves.
If he does, then us kids will be able to take him home.

Mrs Lunn offered to take Patch home for the weekend.

OH MY GOODNESS!
Look what he got up too!!!
Mrs Lunn caught Patch playing on the Playstation!

Patch ate the cat food!

He cooked a snack in the microwave without asking!

Patch!  Get out of the fridge!

Patch made himself at home in the cats' basket

Patch made a new friend with Mrs Lunn's cat Raja

And just when she thought Patch was calming down, she found Patch...

Raiding the fridge!
Swinging from the lights!

AND...

he even stole Mr Lunn's chocolate!!!

What a naughty bear!

Hmm... we don't think Patch will be going home with the kids anytime soon!

ART - BOBBY THE LITTLEST WAR HERO

Some of the children made some beautiful pieces of art today, based on the new book "Bobby the littlest war hero".  They used dye to create the background and then glued on their moon, canary and grass.  They look amazing and will be displayed in the hall for the school to see.

SMART MOVES

We were very lucky to have Mr West come and join us for Smart Moves on Friday.  We could tell he was having lots of fun.

MUST DOs AND CAN DOs

In Piako Rua, we have tasks that we MUST DO and some that we CAN DO.  Mrs Lunn snapped this photo of Holly, Charlie and Kazma checking out what activities they needed to do during Literacy time.  Mrs Lunn was very impressed that having only been at school 14 school days, the kids were able to have a conversation about what activities they needed to complete.

Awesome stuff guys!

COOKING OPT-IN: HOKEY POKEY BISCUITS

Friday is our favourite day in Piako Rua.  We get to opt into Baking and Art workshops.

Today Kosmo, Finn, Parker and Kyan got to make hokey pokey biscuits.  They were fascinated watching what happened when the baking soda was added to the warm milk and golden syrup.  It fizzed up!

The boys enjoyed measuring out the correct amounts of ingredients but their favourite part was eating the biscuits!

CREATIVE PLAY

Today the children were allowed an hour to 'play'.  Some children opted to draw or colour, others built towers with blocks or lego, and others played outside.

AMON'S MAGPIE MOTH

Today Amon brought two Magpie Moth Caterpillars in to show the children.
Amon was confident to stand up the front of the class and tell us all about them.  He is an effective communicator.
Mrs Ruawai goggled what the caterpillars will look like when they turn into moths.

Thanks for sharing your two fuzzy friends Amon.

OUR COMPUTER GUY

This is Braxton.
 He is our Computer Guy.

Braxton's job is to plug in the iPads to charge and unplug them in the morning so they are all ready to use.  He also is responsible for turning on the computers each day.

Thank you for helping us Braxton.

Thia is Miharo.  He is our class Ariki (leader).  He leads us in the Pou Mihi each day.
Our teachers are super proud of how confident snd clearly he leads us.

BEFORE SCHOOL FUN

In case you are wondering what we get up first thing in the morning before the school bell goes, here are a few photos.
